Excerpt

Kate paused at her Victorian dressing table, running her palm over the smooth mahogany. She slid her hands over the antique pewter urn that stood atop the set of small drawers. She let her fingers glide over the cool metal and trace the engraved roses that circled it. Contrary to what many thought, having Karen close by comforted Kate.

Today as she touched the urn that held all that remained of her sweet girl, she choked on a sob. Karen would have been forty years old. It seemed like she had only died, but it had been twenty years. Kate shuddered as she thought of that horrible day and begged her mind to wander to happier times. It was so hard to explain to others how the loss of Karen still plagued her.

A mother just didn’t get over it. The constant agony had eventually subsided, leaving a residual ache in its place. She didn’t think of Karen each day like she had for years. The pain had diminished and like an old injury peaked only at certain times. Not when it rained or the weather changed, but at anniversaries, birthdays, and other pivotal events where the absence of her daughter was intense.
